Alumnus wins journalism award

Alan Selby (MA Journalism, 2013) has been named as ‘Young Journalist of the Year’ by one of the largest UK news publishers, Trinity Mirror.

As a graduate on the highly competitive at Trinity Mirror Training Scheme, Alan delivered more than 30 front page exclusives and demonstrated great skill not only in his written work, but also in using video to enhance his stories. He has had three placements within the group and judges said he “made his mark on every one…with a string of agenda-setting stories and campaigns.”

This is the second professional award for Alan, as he adds to his NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) ‘Student Journalist of the Year’ award, which he received in 2013.

Having completed his placements at Trinity Mirror’s regional papers, Alan is now based at the Daily Mirror in London.

Alan said: “I couldn’t have imagined I’d be where I am now on those long nights swotting up for my NCTJs at Brunel less than two years ago.

“But it just goes to show a lot of hard work goes a long way. The support of everyone along the way has been incredible.”

Paul Lashmar, who heads Journalism at Brunel, said: “We are very proud of Alan. He has always been fantastically focused, hard-working and a natural journalist.”

The award was presented at the second Pride of Trinity Mirror Awards in Birmingham, where television presenter Carol Vorderman (pictured) hosted the event.
